Which Class is Right For Me?
If you are new to yoga, you should try all the different classes to see which suits you best. Below is a guide to understand the different styles a bit better if you are new to yoga. They are arranged them from least strenuous to most strenuous.
Restorative/Hatha yoga is for anybody looking to get more movement into their joints and improve flexibility . Most of the poses are done on the floor using cushions and bolsters to prop up bits of you that don't stretch too well. This is a very relaxing type of yoga. (non heat or gentle low heat) Benefits include greater flexibility, less joint pain, and less mental stress.
- new to yoga?
- concerned about lack of balance or flexibility?·
- over 50?
- struggling with a specific joint/muscle injury?
If you answered yes to any of the above questions, then Restorative/Hatha is worth having a go.
Yin yoga is a traditionally a series of 12 poses that are held for up to 5 minutes each. This really gets into the connective tissue to give you greater joint flexibility. There is also the mental challenge of staying still that long! Most of the poses are on the floor instead of standing. If you are:
- new to yoga
- concerned about lack of balance or flexibility·
- over 50
- struggling with a specific joint/muscle injury
- an athlete or are wanting to really increase flexibility
then Yin is worth checking out.
Vinyasa flow/Power Flow is a 'fluid' type of yoga where the emphasis is on coordinating your breathing with the transition between poses. You flow from one pose to the next. There are more standing poses that are held for a shorter time. Along with improving flexibility and balance, it is a great way to get you heart rate up and burn some calories! If you want to:
- improve flexibility
- get a cardio workout
- improve core strength
- improve your balance
Then you should give one of our Flow classes a go.
Bikram style yoga is a hot style of yoga that follows a series of 26 poses. The Heat (up to 40 degrees celcius) has a number of benefits including improved circulation, decreasing joint inflammation, and releasing toxins.
Bikram poses are designed to temporarily restrict blood flow to different parts of the body, then creating a rush of oxygenated blood to that part of the body when the pose is released.
Bikram has all the benefits of power flow with the addition of the benefits of the far infra red heat. Try Bikram, you will feel amazing after!
